What is a Medical Assistant/Phlebotomy:
A medical assistant with phlebotomy skills is a healthcare professional trained in both administrative and clinical tasks, as well as in phlebotomy (the process of drawing blood). This dual role allows the individual to serve in a more versatile capacity within a medical setting.
Administrative Duties
- Scheduling appointments
- Managing patient records
- Handling insurance paperwork
- Answering phones and other receptionist tasks
Clinical Duties
- Measuring vital signs
- Assisting doctors or nurses during exams
- Administering medications or injections under supervision
Collecting samples for testing
Phlebotomy Duties
- Drawing blood from patients or donors
- Labeling and storing blood samples appropriately
- Understanding best practices for venipuncture (inserting a needle into a vein)
- Following strict safety protocols to prevent cross-contamination and infection
Medical assistants who are also trained in phlebotomy can be valuable assets in healthcare settings like hospitals, clinics, and doctors’ offices, where both general medical assistance and blood drawing are required. To become a medical assistant with phlebotomy skills, one generally needs to complete a specialized training program that covers the scope of both roles. Certification may also be required, depending on the jurisdiction.
You can receive National Certification in our Program.
