What is a Phlebotomist?
A phlebotomist is a healthcare professional trained to draw blood from patients for various medical tests, transfusions, research, or blood donations. The process of drawing blood is called phlebotomy. Phlebotomists often work in hospitals, clinics, outpatient care centers, and other healthcare facilities.
They are skilled in techniques that minimize discomfort during the blood draw and are knowledgeable about best practices for collecting, labeling, and storing blood samples. They also follow strict safety protocols to protect themselves and their patients from infection.
In addition to the technical aspects of blood drawing, phlebotomists are trained to interact professionally and compassionately with patients, who may be anxious or uncomfortable. Many phlebotomists are also responsible for entering patient information into databases and may have administrative duties like answering phones or managing patient records.
To become a phlebotomist, one usually needs to complete a phlebotomy training program, which may be followed by certification, depending on the regulations of the jurisdiction in which they work.
You can receive National Certification in this program!
